The Firm began in 1968 when Richard Chapman, a CPA who was raised near Hundred, West Virginia in Wetzel County, left the Pittsburgh office of Ernst & Ernst (now Ernst & Young) and opened an office in Fairmont, West Virginia. Later, Mr. Chapman opened an office in Star City which was moved to downtown Morgantown. The next major event was in 1978 when Sherry Cunningham, a CPA who was raised in Hundred and also had worked for the Pittsburgh office of Ernst & Ernst, and Don Herd, a partner in the Morgantown office, bought the Firm from the retiring Chapman. At that event, the Firm became Chapman, Herd and Cunningham. Over the next 28 years many events helped shape the Firm of today. There were offices opened and closed in Eugene, Oregon, Oakland, Maryland and Kingwood, West Virginia. At the untimely death of Don Herd in 1987, the Firm name was changed and since that time, Cunningham has been the flagship name. In 1996, Daniel J. Powell became an owner in the Firm, and the name was changed to its current name of Cunningham, Powell & Associates, A.C. Mr. Powell began working for the Firm in 1985. In 2001, James F. Alexander joined the Firm followed by Susan M. Graziani in 2002 giving us our current compliment of four seasoned and experienced CPA's. The Firm is looking forward to its 40th anniversary in 2008 and is committed to continuing the excellence that began with Mr. Chapman's founding of the Firm. In 2007 the Firm added a new owner, James F. Alexander. In 2008 the Firm name changed to Cunningham Powell Alexander, A.C. The firm also introduced the Family Office and Business Office concepts and services to its markets in 2008.
